Ways to Save Money during College

How To Save Money During College: Tips and Tricks

Everyone likes to save a little money here and there especially if it takes minimal effort. There are many ways to save money during college. After being in college for three years now, I have seen a lot of different ways my friends cut costs or make extra money in different ways. I've created a list of the most effective and simplest ways to save money during college.

1. Open up a savings account that earns interest

Check for a bank or credit union that have fewer fees or have special accounts for college students.

2. Brew your own coffee

From one Starbucks lover to another, I know this seems' impossible. But even doing this a couple of times a week can make a real difference.

3. Take advantage of student discounts when you can

There is definitely more student discounts than think. It's best to do a little research. Read here:  College Student Fashion: How To Upgrade Your Wardrobe During College

4. Start investing if at all possible

It's never too early to start investing any amount of money. In fact, you need to start as soon as you can.  If you can't, that's understandable, here is a list of ways you can start investing in yourself without spending any money at all! 9 Valuable Ways You Can Invest in Yourself During Your Twenties

5. Sell things you aren't using online

If you really start going through all of your things, there is a REALLY good chance you will find a couple of things you can do without or things you aren't even sure why you bought them in the first place.

6. Cook your own food more often

This one takes time and practice :)

7. Try to finish college in four years or less

It is completely okay and very normal to not finish college in four years. However, it will save you a lot of money if you do. Therefore, it is important to make a solid plan that puts you on the right path. Related: https://dombagnoche.com/boost-productivty-during-college/

8. Share anything with friends when you can

Textbooks, pizza, alcohol, clothes, basically anything.

9. Make sure you are purchasing textbooks at the lowest price possible

I wrote previously about buying cheaper textbooks and eBooks as an alternative here -->

10. Resell any textbooks you have to purchase

There really is no point in holding onto old textbooks. Even if you think you can't sell them for much, it's still nice to save space in your living area!

11. If you are paying for cable, ask yourself if it's worth it

Most college students don't have a lot of time to watch cable anyway. If you are into watching shows on Netflix or Hulu Plus then there really is no reason to be using cable anymore if you don't need it! You can also rent DVDs from most college/public library's still, crazy, right?

12. Use websites like Amazon to decorate your living space

You can buy literally anything on Amazon and get it to your place in typically no more than two or three days.

13. When buying a laptop, check for student discounts!

I know Apple has discounts, and when I bought both of my Mac Books at Best Buy I was able to receive a student discount.

14. Prevent overspending whenever you can

Making a budget and actually writing down your expenses each month & what you spend money on can really help with this!
